Faith Float a Big Hit!

“Look at those crazy Presbyterians!” we could hear spectators watching the Pocket 4th of July parade saying about Faith’s float. Our float was unique because it was interactive! As it was pulled down the street by Jeff Brown’s beautiful 1958 red MG, a group of Faith members and pastors enticed spectators into tossing nerf football at our float. The object? Get the ball through Abe Lincoln’s and George Washington’s mouth. The prize? A nice cold bottle of water for a very hot day! Thanks to the following folks for participating: Rock family, Brown family, Mendoza family, Reynolds family, Popham family, Ainsworth family, Chapman family, Vaughn family, Virgie Cornelius, Demetris Moore, and Aaron Dahlstedt

Faith Pictorial Directories Have Arrived

Remember way back in February and March when you had your portrait taken for our new directory? Well, the directories have arrived and are in the narthex for you to take home. Everyone whose photo appears in the directory has a copy of the directory with his or her name on it. We have some extra copies available and we’ll also place a couple directories in the Welcome Centers.

Join God’s Green Earth for a Natural History Hike at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center

On Saturday, July 14th        “Enjoy the shade under the majestic 200-year old oak trees and look for deer and turkeys trying to stay cool on hot summer days. Take this guided walk to discover how the plants and animals in the Nature Area each have a place in their environment.” You will also have time to discover the Nature Center and what it has to offer. We will meet in the church parking lot at 12:00 p.m. and will carpool. Please bring a few dollars to contribute to the parking fee. This is a very moderate hike and is open to all ages. If you would like to attend, please sign up after service or email Erin Clay at

Come Help us Celebrate the Beginning of Faith Presbyterian Church

This July It’s Been 40 Years of Faith!

On July 19, 1967, fifty-one people gathered here in the South part of Sacramento for a worship service as a part of a community that would later come to be known as Faith Presbyterian Church.  Though a lot has changed in 40 years, some things have stayed the same.  Even back then, this was a community of people seeking Jesus Christ and how God wanted them to serve the world around them.  On Sunday, July 15, we will focus our worship services on celebrating all that God did back in those first days and what God continues to do in our midst.  You won’t want to miss this unique celebration.

40 Years of Faith and the Cross is Still Standing!

The next time you’re driving down South Land Park Drive past the South Hills Shopping Center, glance up above Vic’s Market and notice the steel cross perched on the roof.  Some of you have probably never noticed that inconspicuous symbol of our faith perched up there.  Even so, it’s been there now for nearly forty years!

Others of you, I know, look up at that cross every time you drive by.  I’m one of those people.  From the very first time that somebody pointed out to me that cross marked the location of the very first gathering place of Faith Presbyterian Church, I can’t help but now notice it and point it out to others every time I’m in the neighborhood.  I’m not sure why it’s still up there.  But I’m glad it is.

On July 19, 1967, fifty-one people gathered in an upstairs room of that shopping center (soon referred to as the “Upper Room”) for the first worship service of a new community that would, one day, become Faith Presbyterian Church.  The Rev. Walt Link had come to Sacramento just five months earlier, called to be the organizing pastor.  It was under his leadership that the group gathered that Wednesday evening to sing, pray and hear the Word of God proclaimed.  (The church didn’t start worshipping on Sunday mornings until September of that year.)

This coming Sunday in worship, we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of this community.  Though we didn’t become a chartered congregation until December of 1969, our roots go back to that first Wednesday night in the Upper Room.  On Sunday, our hope is to think back and remember all the ways in which God was faithfully, and sometimes surprisingly, at work in those first days.  If you are in town, I hope you will make it a point to be with us.  We have some fun things in store.  Even if you have only been a part of this community for 40 days, I believe you will be encouraged by the history of which you now are a part.

It has been a great privilege for me, these past few weeks, to sit and listen to the stories and reflections of some of the people who were around here forty years ago.  I am grateful to each of them for their memories and insights.  What a joy to hear about the enthusiasm and energy which was present.  I was not surprised to hear that even then, this community was deeply committed to hospitality.  Just like today, every person that joined them from the outside was warmly welcomed in as a part of the Faith family.  In ways like this, the original vision of the church has continued to thrive.

It’s remarkable to me to consider that for the last forty years, there has been a community of people in this church who have gathered for worship each and every week.  This Sunday, we will continue that tradition as we gather.  And as He has in every instance, I trust that God will meet us in our worship and draw us to himself.

I look forward to worshipping with you and your family this Sunday!

Grace & Peace,

Faith Welcomes Joan Stock as Parish Associate!

At the June Session meeting, the elders enthusiastically agreed to invite Rev. Joan Stock, a former Associate Pastor here at Faith who has since retired, to return to ministry here as our Parish Associate.  Our invitation was accepted by Joan and, subsequently, approved by Presbytery.    So, what’s a Parish Associate?

According to the our Constitution, The Book of Order (G-14.0515), a Parish Associate is a minister who is retired but who wishes to maintain a relationship with a particular church or churches in keeping with ordination to the ministry of Word and Sacrament.  The Parish Associate is responsible to the pastor, as head of staff, on an “as needed, as available” basis and with or without remuneration (it will be without in Joan’s case).  This relationship is established when the individual is nominated by the pastor, and then agreed upon by the parish associate, the session and the presbytery.

We are thrilled that Joan will be serving here in this capacity  In light of her knowledge of this congregation and the specific skills and strengths which she brings, we believe Joan will be a great asset to this congregation in this capacity.  In particular, Joan will be serving at Faith on an “as needed, as available” basis in the following areas:

Many of you already know Joan.  For those who don’t, we hope you’ll introduce yourself to her and welcome her back to Faith!

Open Prayer Requests in Worship

Many people here at Faith have pointed out how they enjoy the opportunity to offer personal prayer requests in worship on Sunday morning.  The pastors have committed to making sure that at least once a month, typically on the 2nd Sunday of the month, that we will set aside time for individuals in worship to voice joys and concerns for prayer.  This is always a wonderful time to pray for one another.
